New Magnetic: A Modern Sans Serif Font for Bold Brand Identity

It started with a blank Figma canvas and a client email that read: “We want our new ceramic studio to feel grounded but unexpected—like clay that’s both raw and refined.” No mood board yet. No logo sketch. Just that quiet, thrilling moment when you know the right typeface could anchor the whole identity before a single shape is drawn.

I opened my font library and scrolled straight to New Magnetic. Not because it was new—but because I’d seen its intersected letters in a design journal last month and remembered how they held tension without feeling forced. Designed by Yellowfonts, this geometric sans serif has that rare balance: clean enough for craft-focused minimalism, distinctive enough to stand out on a crowded Instagram feed or a hand-stamped product label.

The first test? Placing it on a simple wordmark mockup: “Studio Clay.” Instantly, the intersected strokes in the ‘A’ and ‘R’ added rhythm—not gimmickry. That subtle geometry gives New Magnetic a quiet confidence. It doesn’t shout. It leans in. And because it’s built on strong verticals and open apertures, even at small sizes (like on a business card or tag), it stays legible without losing its character.

For this project, we used New Magnetic as the primary display font—never body text. It shines best at 24pt and up: on signage, packaging headers, social banners, and the hero section of the studio’s website. Its medium weight carries presence; the bold adds impact without heaviness. I avoided using it below 16pt in print, and never for long paragraphs—this isn’t a workhorse sans serif like Helvetica or Inter. It’s a *statement* sans serif. A deliberate choice.

What surprised me most was how well it paired with a quiet serif for contrast. We landed on a warm, low-contrast serif for captions, ingredient lists, and website body copy—something with soft terminals and generous spacing. The pairing created breathing room: New Magnetic brought structure and modernity; the serif added warmth and approachability. No clash. Just clarity with personality.

On physical materials, it performed beautifully. Printed on uncoated kraft paper for product tags? Crisp. Laser-cut into wood for a shop sign? The intersected forms translated cleanly—no visual mush. Even on a matte-finish ceramic mug, where ink sits slightly raised, the letterforms retained their precision. That tells me New Magnetic was engineered with real-world output in mind—not just screen previews.

We tested three weights: Light, Medium, and Bold. No italics, no condensed variants—but honestly, we didn’t miss them. The Medium handled headlines and logos perfectly; Light gave us elegant subheads; Bold anchored posters and web banners. For a small studio with tight timelines, having fewer, more intentional options kept the system cohesive. (Side note: always check license terms—New Magnetic is a commercial font, fully cleared for branding, packaging, and digital use, including client deliverables.)

One practical tip I’ll pass along: don’t drop New Magnetic into your brand board and call it done. Try it in context *before* locking it in. Paste it onto a photo of your actual storefront. Drop it into a mockup of your Instagram grid. Print a sample label at actual size. See how the intersected letters hold up next to photography, texture, or other graphic elements. In our case, the ‘X’ and ‘K’ looked especially strong beside hand-thrown forms—like visual echoes of negative space and structure.

It also works thoughtfully across platforms. On the website, we used New Magnetic only for H1s and key CTAs—keeping body copy in our supporting serif. That preserved hierarchy and ensured fast loading (no web font bloat). In social graphics, it popped against neutral backdrops: oat milk latte foam, raw clay textures, natural linen. Never against busy patterns—its geometry needs room to breathe.

And yes—it’s a sans serif, but not *just* another sans serif. That intersection detail (especially visible in uppercase ‘A’, ‘V’, ‘W’, and lowercase ‘e’) adds micro-personality without sacrificing professionalism. It signals care in craft, which aligned perfectly with how the studio talks about their process: intentional, tactile, precise.

We didn’t use it everywhere. No menu boards. No tiny QR code labels. No multi-line testimonials. That’s okay. A strong brand identity doesn’t need one font to do everything—it needs the right font, in the right place, saying the right thing. New Magnetic said “considered,” “contemporary,” and “human-made” all at once.

If you’re weighing it for your next project—a local café rebrand, a skincare line, a creative studio, or even a self-published zine—ask yourself: does this need quiet authority or expressive distinction? If the answer leans toward distinction, and you’re working with short-form, high-impact text, New Magnetic earns its place. It’s not background noise. It’s a design decision with intention baked in.

Just remember: pair it wisely, scale it thoughtfully, and let its geometry do the talking. You’ll know it’s working when clients point to the logo and say, “That feels like *us*”—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s true.
